About STL Memorial Vet Fund
On December 10, 2024 I tragically lost my heart horse, Skye. Although her death was heartbreaking, I felt as though it shouldn't be all bad. This is why we have decided to create the "Skye's The Limit Vet Bill Relief Fund."
I found Skye around 6 years ago. Little did I know that I was getting a horse that most people only dream of having, and one that you don't find very often. She took a young teenager (me), who had no confidence and helped me love the sport again. She had loads of heart and always gave 110%, no matter the challenges I threw at her. She taught many youngsters and beginners, and was a great teacher. She truly was a gem. Skye did everything from barrel racing to pleasure shows, and even took a leap of faith into show jumping. In the fall of 2023, I moved her to Sassy Strides Equestrian to further our education and to ultimately give her the best life possible. I had a horse who didn't know how to jump to within a little under a year jumping 2'3 courses! Crazy right?! That's just how amazing she was. Unfortunately over the past 6 years, Skye had many undiagnosed health issues which led to spending thousands of dollars at the vet every few months. This past year we thought we found the answer to our problems... a loose and slightly fractured tooth! During the extraction process we found out that Skye was a lot older than I was previously told. With that information, I realized she was on borrowed time. Shortly after the tooth extraction, I lived most horse owners worst nightmare. An impaction colic. Despite having the vet out at the first sign of a problem, the impaction went undiagnosed for over 24 hours. When Skye did not improve, we admitted her to the clinic where the next day they discovered the impaction. 48 hours after bringing her to the clinic, I had a $5,000 vet bill. That was a big financial burden, especially being a young adult with not much savings. After seeing how much pain she endured over the course of 4 days I couldn't bear to watch her suffer anymore, and ultimately decided to lay her to rest. The loss broke me in two and still does everyday. I believe that no one should have to decide between bills and their beloved pet, which led us to create the STL Vet Bill Relief Fund. I was blessed to have gotten so much support with my vet bill and I thought I should pay it forward. Skye was such an amazing horse and it is my duty to carry on her legacy and to make her name live on - what better way to do that then by helping others in need. |
Our Goal
Our goal is to help those in need when it comes to emergency vet bills, whether that’s a horse getting its leg stuck in a fence and needing stitches, a bowed tendon, or colic surgery. For most, a random $2,000-5,000 vet bill is a lot of added stress, especially when you have the usual expenses of your horse as well as mortgages, car payments, etc. We want to help take some stress off your plate by helping pay for a portion of the bill. If your horse doesn’t make it through the treatment, getting help with the aftermath can help with closure. We all know that vet care is pricey these days so maybe we can all help each other by paying it forward. We are raising money through this fund because no one should ever have the awful feeling of being in debt or having to decide between breaking the bank or saving your beloved pets life.
